Getting to Know Your Inner Geek (Screens) – Part 5

All PC parts can fall into just one of four main categories:
- Input
- Output
- Process
- Storage

No matter what the part, how big or small, it will fit into one of these four categories. Screens are the most important output that we use on a computer, the manner in which the computer talks to use. So having that in mind, we can understand why it is so important that the screen that we use is so important. So we will look at a few things to keep in mind…

Older screens are called Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors and are not really ever used so we will stop there with that. Newer monitors come in one of two types: LCD (liquid crystal display) or LED (light emitting diode), both of which give a good image, depending on the specifications.

Resolution

Probably the most important aspect of any screen, the resolution is a count of lines across and columns down. When we talk about High definition, the resolution is 1920 x 1080 which means that there are 1080 rows and 1920 columns. It goes without saying that the higher these numbers, the clearer the image. When looking at a new screen, it should be no less than 1366×768.

Contrast ratio

Contrast ratio is the difference between the lightest white and the darkest black and it is expressed as a ration, many screens are around the 50000:1 mark. A screen with less than this will not produce a bad image but if you want to watch movies on your monitor, don’t look at anything less than the number about.

Size

The obvious consideration, how big do you want your screen to be? This is measured from the top left corner to the bottom right and is usually expressed in inches (“). On a desktop machine you would be looking at a minimum of 20”, but preferably more like 24”.

Although these are not the only specifications to consider when it comes to screen, other things you may want to look into is the response time as well as the refresh rate, but if you stick to the guidelines above, you should have pleasant watching for some time to come.

Happy watching…
