Since Apple released the iPad and more recently the iPad2, there have been a plethora of tablet PC’s come out, each one claiming to be the “iPad killer” and whether you like Apple or not, you have to admit that anyone claiming to be better than the mighty iPad have some large shoes to fill.
Samsung originally released the 7” galaxy tablet that has had both good and bad reviews and the form factor has seemed to be the most contentious of all discussion points. So now with the 10.1”, have they now managed to create something to match Apple?
Both of the tablets use a 1Ghz dual core processor and can record and playback 720p videos but this is where the two tablets part ways; the Galaxy is obviously bigger, albeit by 0.4 inches, so if you are looking for a tablet to become your primary device, the Galaxy takes a step in the right direction. If it’s just for fun that you want a tablet, then the rumored 8.9” Galaxy, which has the same specs as it’s bigger brother, may be the better choice – Samsung seem to have covered all their bases. The Galaxy tablet has a slightly better resolution than the iPad at 1280×800 versus 1024×768, and it also has double the RAM of the iPad. Where Apple does trump Samsung is in the area of storage: the iPad has a maximum of 64GB and the Galaxy 32GB.
Two of the most important features for anyone looking at buying a tablet PC are battery life and thickness (yes I know that there are some other things that you would look at…) The two match in terms of battery life at a speculated 10 hours, but the Galaxy is millimeters ahead of the iPad, 8.8mm for the iPad to the 8.6mm of the Galaxy.
So on paper the Galaxy certainly seems to win, but the thing is, we always come back to compare any new tablet to the iPad. Now some would say that this is only because the iPad was the first in an ever increasing list of similar devices, but I think it is more than that. I think that the Apple has something that the others don’t, and no I am not a huge Apple fan… I use a Dell XPS laptop and a BlackBerry Bold phone, both of which I am more than happy with. But if I were to spend my money one on of these, if I could fully use the Galaxy without a Google account, it would be a simple choice, but until that is an option, I would have to stay with the iPad.
