For the dreamers and the insanely wealthy

So if you have a very … um… VERY healthy bank balance, and you really have no idea what to do with your extra cash, here are a few computers that will sort that out, and for the rest of us, well this will just get your mouth watering a little.

Darwin Machine has released a gaming desktop which will more than match anything else out there, named the Hammerhead HMR 989, this beast will set you back a not too shabby $9 500 (R65 000) at full spec. Take that moment to gasp, have the few breaths and get the brown paper bag to help you breathe if needed because the specs may again take your breath away. With Intel’s latest and greatest Core i7 990X, you have 6 cores (12 threads) each running at 3.46 GHz and a turbo boost to bump that up to 3.73 – and that’s out the box, overclockers please wipe your mouths. There is a nifty 12 gigs of RAM and two nVidia GTX 580 graphics cards, giving a total of 3 Gigs of RAM dedicated to graphics. Thanks to the above and the two 128GB SSD’s, you’re looking at a start-up time claimed to be around 4 second and with 2 TB of storage and a blu-ray optical drive in there, start your dreaming, oh and by the way it is a bit of a looker as well.

Dell Alienware also have a desktop to match the Darwin, and in my opinion better it. Not only is it cheaper, but there are a few specs which show promise for an overall better performing machine (only real life tests will prove this, something I am not gonna get to do anytime soon). The dell will only hit your CC a mere $ 7500 or R 51 500, so we already looking at it being cheaper. It runs the same CPU as the Darwin, only Dell have generously overclocked it to 4.0Ghz per core. Top-end Alienware PC’s also come with liquid cooling, and this machine is no different. Matching the same 12GB DDR3 of RAM as the Darwin, running in triple channel guise and at 1600MHz. The dual ATI HD 6950 graphics cards add an additional 2 gigs each which tops the Darwin machine. 2x256GB SSD’s and an additional 2TB of HDD means that you aren’t going to run out of storage anytime soon and the dual Blu-ray drives and an array of Alienware peripherals mean that you are also getting much better value for money. Oh and on the looks front, I personally prefer the Dell, although the Darwin will certainly turn a few, sorry, a lot more heads.

Staying with Dell Alienware, if “portability” is more your style, they offer a few good (I know, I know that nothing on this page can be said to be just good) laptops. The top of the line being the M17x 3D (yes, as in 3D DVD’s) which when running at full spec looks something like this:
Intel’s Core i7 2820QM CPU running at 2.3GHz (turbo boost to 3.4GHz), 16 Gig Dual Channel DDR3 RAM (1333MHz) with an added 1.5 GDDR5 Video RAM from the GTX 460M. 2 x 256 SSD drives means fast boot times and the Blu-ray player means that you can watch those 3D movies from your built-in full HD monitor. All this will set you back relatively small $ 3800 (R 26 000) and although it sounds a bit steep, you are looking at a laptop that will kick many desktops, but don’t expect a long battery life.

So if you are insanely wealthy or just want to dream a bit, there is definitely something out there for you.
