Foursquare :: Latest In Mobile Applications

Foursquare seems to be the latest thing in mobile technology & we are seeing more and more people making use of it.

Foursquare is a mobile application which you can download onto your mobile phone by visiting their mobi site at  foursquare.com/mobile , or, you can visit foursquare.com if you need more information.

They say that this application is most suited to those who use iPhones, Blackberries, Androids or Palms. But there is nothing stopping you from making use of the Foursquare mobi site, even if you don’t have one of these phones.

They have even made provision for those who cannot access the mobile web through their phones via text messaging. The only unfortunate thing, is that this service has only been made available to those living in the US, but who knows, maybe we’ll get this service in SA in the near future? But for now, it’s best made use of via the mobile web.

So why would anyone bother to use Foursquare?

Well, it’s a bit like a geographical Twitter. Once you have downloaded the application to your phone, it’ll be linked to your Twitter or Facebook accounts. You’ll use Foursquare to find out where your friends are & what they are doing there, as well as to “check-in” at various locations based on your GPS co-ordinates. If you find a friend that’s checked-in & in the same area as you, you can arrange to meet up. Clever, right?

Use it to update your friends on your whereabouts, and to promote your favourite places to go as well as cool spots that you have just discovered – all while you are there.

To use Foursquare, you would need to “check-in” at one of the places that Foursquare lists, and leave a tip for your friends about where you are and what you like (or don’t like) about where you are. If the place you are at isn’t listed, then you can easily add it to Foursquare while checked-in.

Wherever you are, you can search previous tips that have been left by other Foursquare users. Find out which places they recommend, what the best item is on a restaurant’s menu, where a good place to go is for some spontaneous entertainment, or where you’ll get the best value for money for a particular item that you need.

You can check-in at any time or at any place, since Foursquare will give you results based on your GPS location at the time of checking-in. Every time you do this, your tips are displayed in your Twitter & Facebook accounts.

Many businesses around the world have started using Foursquare as a means to promote themselves. Every time you checks-in and leaves a tip at a particular spot, counts towards being made a “mayor” of that place. Most businesses will give their “mayors” free stuff as a reward for their loyalty. Even if you don’t become a mayor, most businesses advertise specials that are only applicable to Foursquare users.
This keeps your customers coming back and promotes your business as well.

For more info you can check-in at  foursquare.com/businesses.

This is a fun application for anyone that is interested in founding more out about the city they live in, or current location. Perfect for those who like to stay current & have a bit of spontaneous fun.

Try it out!
